of last year's Big
Blue Festival

The Big Blue Festival has changed quite dramatically over the years. It started off as a festival complementing the TotalSports Challenge events; it then moved on to fragmented events that were community based; and finally moved back to Kleinmond with community based activities. The annual TotalSports Challenge has become a permanent fixture on the national sporting calendar. This multi-disciplined sport is the only one of its kind. Supported by international names and brands, this event has been hosted by Hangklip-Kleinmond ever since its inception. Hangklip-Kleinmond Tourism has been actively involved in the planning and management of the finish area at the Kleinmond Lagoon.

For the first two years the responsibility of the Bureau lay in logistically supporting the TotalSports event organisers, the sale of alcoholic beverages and the management of various vendors. Stillwater Sports Management and Top Events – event organisers for TotalSports Challenge – offered the opportunity, in 2004, to the Hangklip-Kleinmond Tourism Bureau to extend it's participation by increasing the size and volume of the liquor sales and creating, for the first time, a beer garden. The organisers then also offered all facilities, already erected for the Saturday event, to Hangklip-Kleinmond Tourism to be used for a community participation day. With the blue flag status awarded to Kleinmond's main beach, the community took the initiative to create a celebratory festival for the local community and visitors and the BIG BLUE was born.

The first BIG BLUE FESTIVAL was held on 7 January 2005. Local community participation from the Hangklip-Kleinmond area was broken down as follows: festival organisation 100%; entertainment 100%; and vendors 85%. Community associations that were involved included Kleinmond Senior Citizen Centre, Kleinmond Netball Club, Kleinmond Rugby Club and Hangklip Athletics Club.

The 2008 festival incorporated events leading up to the Big Blue Festival in Kleinmond (13 December 2007 to 12 January 2008). These events included the festival opening at the Hawston Swimming Pool, the Fynbos Festival in Kleinmond's Harbour Road, Fun Runs in Kleinmond, a half-marathon in Betty's Bay, a sunset concert at Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens, the Zip Zap Circus performance at Kleinmond Rugby Field and the Big Blue Music Festival (promoting local acts) at the lagoon. The 2008 TotalSports Challenge was, again, supported by all major sponsors. The day's events also received full television coverage.

For the first time in 2009, the festival was held in the "daycamp" area at the main beach. The decision had the following benefits:

Layout
A central festival area meant that festival visitors could park, attend the festival and participate in all the activities in one central area. This made for a very festive atmosphere.

Security
Fenced area allowed for strict access control, which in turn allowed festival goers a safe environment.

One entry / exit
Assisted the organising committee to count the number of visitors to the festival.

The BIG BLUE FESTIVAL 2009 was the most successful to date and aimed to showcase outdoor adrenalin activities in a magnificent setting. The festival offered the community economic opportunities and participation.
